Hole 3 - Lodge FieldStand on the Tee and all you can see is trees because this hole is a long slow dog leg left. The first obstacle is the fairway bunker on the left edge of the fairway. A good drive will clear this easily, and set up a mid to long iron into the green. Hit anything less than perfect off the Tee and you will struggle to reach the green in 2.
The green slopes back to front and will hold a well hit second.
Hole 4 - Foxes FollyThe first par 3 and the first of the 4 holes on this course that prove that a good golf hole does not need to be 450yds long.
Although only 179 yds long, with the wind against you, it may need 3 or 4 clubs more than on a calm day.
With out of bounds on the left, a good straight shot is the one that pays dividends. Push your shot and the trees to the right of the green make an up and down difficult.
Hole 5 - RhododendronsA very underrated hole in many eyes, but look at the cards after your round and don't be surprised to find 5's and 6's!
Standing on the tee you see trees and a very narrow fairway, this is the illusion of the course architect. The fairway is very generous, however, those that do not go in the Rhododendrons on the corner, have to avoid the push / slice into the trees on the right.
Halfway down the fairway stands a big Oak, this also marks the big swale in the ground which needs to be crossed by your drive to give an easier shot into the green. The best line is in from the left of the fairway, but remember the OB is also lurking down the first 180 yds of fairway.
The green slopes back to front and right to left and being on the green will not guarantee a 2 putt.
Hole 6 - Midlands ChoiceThe second par 3 presents a different challenge to the 4th hole. The distance is similar from the back tees, but the tree at the front right of the green means that you need to shape a shot if the pin is front right.
The green slopes back to front and when the pin is front left you can run off the green easily.
Clubbing on this hole is very important. Under club and you can end up with a long uphill putt or a sandy lie, over club and it could be downhill all the way or overshoot the green and there's an OB out there!
This hole was voted the best in the Midlands some years ago by club pro's.
