Captain 2024 - Liam Molesworth

Captains Week

I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved during Captain’s Week! So much preparation went into making this week a success, and I’m sure you will all agree that it was enjoyable.

I started my first ever Captain’s week with the Club Captains Day – Seniors Stableford, which got off to a rocky start, having to call an Ambulance for our longest serving member, Doug Beresford, who, let’s say, poured a little too much whiskey in his shot glass resulting in shortness of breath! Thankfully, Doug returned to his usual self within a few minutes, and I had to remind him that the day wasn’t about him! A big well done to Simon Shepherd, who had an outstanding 43 points to take home the prize.

On Tuesday, we welcomed a full field for our Captain’s Texas Scramble, which was a 5 pm shotgun start. I’m glad we decided to stock up on fireball for this event, as the afternoon sun made participants very thirsty. It was tough watching, knowing my clubs were at home! A big congratulations to Andrew Grice, Andrew Morton, Adrian Phillips and Martin Sandford, who won on countback with a score of -19!

We had a slightly wet start for the Lady's competition on Wednesday, but the weather was certainly better than the forecast! Some very good scores, but the winner of the event with a very respectable 34 points was Elizabeth Wragg; well done! We put on a Texas Scramble for our Junior Section in the evening, which was my favourite competition of the week!

The juniors went out and played a team event over five holes, and some of the skills on show certainly mean our club has a bright future! Well done to Ben Hall, Charlie Gilfeather, and Max Patridge, who came away as worthy winners!

Another 5 p.m. shotgun start on Thursday kicked off our AM/AM, and we nearly ran out of fireball again! We had a range of closest-to-pins up for grabs, and the winning team, with a total of 126, was Nick Geary, Sarah Geary, Rich Anderson, and Elaine Shergold.

Captain’s week ended on Saturday with our Gents Captain’s Day Stableford Comp and our Family Fun Day BBQ. It was lovely seeing so many kids at the club enjoying themselves. Hopefully, we can continue to create an environment that encourages families to get more involved in the club. Some very respectful scoring considering the challenging conditions saw the standings as follows:

Overall-Winner – Billy Mee (39 points – Div. 3 winner)

2nd Place – Mark Sandford (37 Points – Div. 1 winner)

3rd Place – Nic Iliffe (36 points – Div. 2 winner)

As you’re aware, my chosen Charity for the year is Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a cause very close to my heart. Thanks to your kind donations throughout the week, after collecting money through raffle tickets and our mini-auction, I am pleased to confirm we have raised over £4,000 this week alone! You have no idea how much of an impact this will have on the sick children using BCH’s services, and I can’t thank you enough for all your efforts.

I hope you all support next year’s captain as much as you have supported me.

Thank you!
